New

A poem.

Field of Wishes
Jan 13, 2021

I want to be brand new.
Like a journal freshly purchased,
empty pages full of promise.
No one has dog eared my pages to remember
interesting stories, issues to bring up in a fight,
moments to remember when I act out
of character.
Pages have not been threatened to
be torn out or scratched illegible.
Some memories are just better left forgotten.
Some memories should not be immortalized.
Some thoughts should not be written down.

If I was brand new, I could forget
the heartache, erase the tear-blotched words.
Bring back the child who once lived inside me.

If I was brand new, I could rewrite
my life to be… well, perfect.
If I was brand new
would I even be… me?
